What She Actually Wants

Weekly flowers, and other rituals worth more than they cost

Fifty-two small things beat one enormous thing. The arithmetic is not close.

Here is the arithmetic nobody does. A modest bunch of flowers is about nine dollars. Every Friday for a year is roughly four hundred and seventy. Most men would consider a single four-hundred-and-seventy-dollar gift generous, and it would be — once.

Same money. Fifty-two occasions instead of one. This is not a close call and it is the most under-used piece of information in modern relationships.

A grand gesture is a promise you keep once. A ritual is a promise you keep fifty-two times a year.

01

Why frequency beats size.

Occasional gestures get evaluated on scale, and scale has a ceiling you will hit and then have to beat next year. Rituals get evaluated on reliability, and reliability is the actual thing being assessed in a relationship that is heading somewhere.

There is a second effect. A weekly ritual means there is never a long stretch where she is wondering whether you are still trying. That gap is where most of the quiet damage in a relationship happens, and a standing Friday order closes it permanently.

02

The rules of a good ritual.

It has to be scheduled, not remembered. Set a recurring order or a recurring alarm. Relying on memory means it becomes a thing you sometimes forget, and a forgotten ritual is worse than no ritual — you have now built an expectation and started missing it.

It has to be small enough to be sustainable. If it is a strain at month two it will be gone by month four.

And it must not be announced. A ritual you draw attention to is a performance, and she can tell the difference instantly.

03

Rituals that are not flowers.

Coffee made and brought to her before she asks, every morning. A Sunday walk that is in the calendar rather than proposed each week. A drink poured and handed over at seven on a Friday. A film night with an actual projector rather than a laptop balanced on a cushion.

The common thread: each one is a fixed point in the week that happens whether or not either of you is in the mood to organise it. That is the entire value.

Infrastructure for a weekly ritual

Each of these makes a recurring evening easier to keep. Buy the ritual, not the object — the object is just how you stop having to plan it.

04

The one to start this week.

Flowers, Friday, standing order. Not because flowers are special — because it is the lowest-effort ritual with the highest recognition, and once one recurring thing exists in the week, adding a second is much easier.

Do it for six weeks before you evaluate it. The effect is cumulative and almost invisible at week two.

There is a version of this column that reads as manipulation — a set of tactics for producing a reaction. That is not what this is, and it would not work anyway, because the whole mechanism depends on repetition and nobody sustains a tactic for a year.

What actually happens is that the ritual changes you before it changes her. Turn up every Friday for six months and you are simply a person who turns up. The flowers are incidental.

Frequently asked

How often should I buy my girlfriend flowers?

Weekly, small, on the same day. A modest bunch every Friday costs about the same over a year as one large annual bouquet and outperforms it substantially, because you are buying fifty-two occasions instead of one.

Is it less special if flowers are expected?

No — expectation is the point. Reliability is what is actually being assessed, and a standing Friday order removes the long gaps where she wonders whether you are still trying.

What are good weekly rituals other than flowers?

Coffee brought to her before she asks, a Sunday walk that lives in the calendar, a drink poured at seven on Friday, a proper film night. Anything that is a fixed point in the week and does not need organising each time.
