Getting Serious

Boyfriend to fiancé: the actual timeline

She has a rough date in her head and has not told you it. Here is how to find out without asking, and what to do in the year before.

There is a specific kind of misery available to a woman who is waiting on a proposal she is fairly confident is coming but cannot ask about, and a specific kind of paralysis available to a man who wants to do it properly and keeps discovering another thing he should sort out first.

The two of you are in the same year. You are just experiencing it very differently.

01

1. The proposal is not the decision. It is the announcement of a decision.

This is the part men get wrong most often. A proposal is not the moment you find out whether she wants to marry you — that is a conversation, and it should have already happened, more than once, in ordinary language, with no ring present.

If you do not already know the answer, you are not ready to propose. You are ready to have a conversation. Those are different projects and only one of them requires a jeweller.

By the time you are choosing a ring, the answer should be boring. The surprise is the timing, never the outcome.

02

2. Have the three unromantic conversations first.

Money — what you each earn, owe, and believe about spending. Children — whether, and roughly when. Geography — where this life happens, and whose family is nearby.

These are not mood-killers, they are the actual content of a marriage, and having them settled is what makes a proposal feel like a natural next step rather than a swerve. Do them over months, not in one evening, and not on a special occasion.

03

3. Find the ring size without asking.

Take a ring she already wears — from the correct hand, ideally the ring finger or the one next to it — to a jeweller, or measure its internal diameter with a ruler at home. Do this on an ordinary evening when she is out, not the week you plan to propose.

Do not ask her friends unless you are entirely sure they can hold it. The single most common way a proposal gets spoiled is a well-meaning friend who could not sit on the news for five weeks.

04

4. Learn what she actually likes, from evidence.

Not by asking. Look at what she already wears: gold or silver, delicate or substantial, plain or stoned. Almost every woman is consistent about metal and scale, and a ring that fights her existing jewellery will sit on her hand looking borrowed.

If she has ever sent you a photo of a ring, that photo is not a suggestion. It is a specification.

The year before: what to buy in the meantime

Twelve months is a long time to give nothing while you save. Earrings and bracelets carry no sizing risk and keep the year from feeling like a holding pattern — from our sister site loryn.com.

5. Do not propose on a major holiday.

Christmas, Valentine's Day and her birthday are all bad choices for the same reason: the date already belongs to something else, and forever afterwards the anniversary competes for attention with a day that was already busy.

An ordinary Tuesday in April is a better story than the twenty-fifth of December, and she will tell that story several hundred times.

06

6. Make the year before better, not just the day.

The most common complaint from women in this exact position is not that it is taking too long. It is that everything went into neutral while they waited — that he stopped planning things because the big thing was coming.

Do the opposite. This is the year to start the weekly ritual, book the trip, fix the shoe rotation, and generally behave like someone worth marrying rather than someone about to ask.

Behaving like someone worth marrying

Unromantic, effective, and all of it survives the engagement. The watch in particular is the correct thing to receive rather than give in this year.

The honest summary: the ring is the smallest technical problem in this whole year. The conversations are the work, the waiting is the difficulty, and the thing she will remember is not the size of the stone but whether the twelve months leading up to it felt like they were going somewhere.

Frequently asked

How long should you date before getting engaged?

There is no correct number, but the useful test is whether you have settled money, children and geography in ordinary conversation. Couples who have had those three discussions tend to be ready; couples who have not usually are not, regardless of how long it has been.

How do I find out her ring size without asking?

Borrow a ring she already wears on the relevant hand and take it to a jeweller, or measure the internal diameter at home. Do it weeks before you intend to propose so it is not connected in her memory to anything.

Should I propose on a holiday?

Better not to. Christmas, Valentine's Day and her birthday already belong to something else, and the anniversary will compete with them every year afterwards. An ordinary date makes a better story.

What should I buy her while I'm saving for a ring?

Earrings or a bracelet — no sizing risk, wearable daily, and it keeps the year from feeling like a waiting room. Match the metal she already wears.
