About Build a Boyfriend

Build a Boyfriend is a shoppable men's style and gift guide. It began as a Pinterest account — 40 boards covering men's style, gifts, grooming, home, travel, date nights and couples costumes — and this site is the searchable version of it.

Today it holds 60 written collections and 1,180 picks, every one of them rated and reviewed. Each collection is a guide with a buying order rather than a grid: what to buy first, what to skip, and what the thing is actually for.

How we pick

Three tests, in order. Will he use it weekly? Will it still look right in five years? Is it the best version of its category at that price? A product has to pass at least two.

Underneath that sits a sourcing bar, and it works differently at different prices. Mass-market picks have to clear a volume test — a real brand, and a deeply established listing — because the risk there is counterfeits and listings that vanish. Luxury picks cannot clear that test, because a four-thousand-dollar Swiss watch sells in tens rather than tens of thousands, so those must come from a brand-operated storefront instead. Both bars are written out in full.

We do not list a product because it pays more. We do not pad a collection to hit a round number — a few pages here have four picks because four is how many we found worth recommending. And we do not publish a photograph we have not looked at: every hero image on this site was reviewed by eye before the product went live.

How the ratings work

All 1,180 picks carry a score out of five and a written review. The score is an editorial judgement — ours — and not a customer rating, and it is never a retailer's star average republished under our name. The scale runs from 3.5 to 5 because anything we would rate lower is left off the site rather than reviewed badly.

The reviews say what the thing is for, who it suits, and what the catch is. There is nearly always a catch, and we would rather print it than have you find it after checkout.

How we make money

Affiliate commission. Most picks link to Amazon, where we are an Amazon Associate and earn from qualifying purchases. Some link instead to The Luxury Closet for pre-owned watches, or to partners like Coofandy, Abracadabra NYC and Hotel Collection through CJ Affiliate. The price you pay is identical either way — the commission comes out of the retailer's margin, not your total. Full disclosure here.

We hold no stock and ship nothing. Every order is fulfilled by the retailer, on their terms, and those terms are set out here — including the ones that are stricter than people expect.

What we do not do

We do not publish Amazon prices. Their terms only permit it through a live API feed, and a stale number is worse than no number, so those picks carry price bands and the live listing tells you what it costs today. Pre-owned watches are the exception: those prices are published openly by the seller, so we show them.

We will not fake a review. We have not personally tested every item on this site and we say so on every product page rather than implying otherwise. What we do is research the category, read what owners report, look hard at the photographs, and tell you honestly why a pick earned its place — and where it falls short.

If a pick has got worse — a brand sold, quality dropped, a listing hijacked — we would rather hear about it and pull the page than defend a score.
