Privacy policy

Build a Boyfriend does not ask you for anything. There is no account to create, no newsletter to join and no form to fill in. There is exactly one advertising cookie, from Pinterest, and it does not load unless you agree to it.

That is not a privacy stance we adopted for its own sake — it is simply what the site is. Every page is a static file. There is no database, no login, and nowhere for your details to be stored even if we wanted them.

What this site collects

Nothing that identifies you. We use Vercel Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies and without building a profile of you across sites. It records the page you landed on, the referring site, and coarse details like country and device type. It does not store your IP address, and it cannot follow you anywhere else on the internet. It runs whether or not you accept the banner, because there is no cookie in it to consent to.

The Pinterest cookie, and your choice about it

Most people arrive here from Pinterest, and the Pinterest Tag is how we see which pins actually work. It is a third-party advertising cookie: it can be used to build retargeting audiences, and it can recognise you on Pinterest afterwards. That is a real trade, so we ask first rather than telling you afterwards.

If you decline, the tag is never loaded — the script is not fetched and no cookie is set. Nothing on this site stops working, because nothing here depends on it. Your answer is remembered in your own browser's local storage, not on a server, so clearing your site data will simply bring the question back.

We have deliberately not enabled Pinterest's Enhanced Match, which passes a converting visitor's email address to Pinterest. We collect no email addresses, so there is nothing to pass.

Our host, Vercel, keeps short-lived server logs for security and debugging in the ordinary way any web server does.

What happens when you click a buy link

You leave this site. When you click through to Amazon, The Luxury Closet or any other retailer we link to, you enter their website under their privacy policy, not ours. Amazon appends our associate tag to the link so they know the visit came from here and can pay commission on a resulting sale. We see none of it: not your name, not your basket, not your card, not whether you bought anything at all. We are shown aggregate earnings, not customers.

Amazon and the other retailers will set their own cookies on their own domains once you arrive. What they do with those is governed by Amazon's privacy notice and the equivalent policy at each retailer. Read the affiliate disclosure for how the commission itself works.

Images and embedded content

Product photographs are served from Amazon's own image servers rather than copied onto ours, which is a licensing requirement rather than a technical choice. Loading a page therefore makes a request to Amazon for those images, and Amazon can see that request the way any image host can.

Children

This site is written for adults buying gifts for adults. It is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them — which is straightforward here, since we do not knowingly collect anything from anyone.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, the UK GDPR and the CCPA you have the right to access, correct or delete personal data a business holds about you, and to opt out of its sale. We hold no personal data about you and we sell nothing to anyone, so in practice there is nothing to request and nothing to opt out of. If you believe otherwise, write to us and we will look into it properly.

Changes

If we ever add something that does collect data — a newsletter, say — this page will be updated before it launches, not after, and the date at the top will change.
