What She Actually Wants

The Boyfriend Report Card

Eight categories. Mark yourself honestly. The remedial reading is linked at the bottom of each one.

This is not a personality quiz and there is no score at the end that tells you what kind of tree you are. It is eight questions with obviously correct answers, which is rather the point — every one of them is a thing you could fix this month and probably have not.

Mark yourself honestly. She would.

01

1. Footwear.

Pass: you own at least one pair of shoes that could not be worn to a gym. Fail: three pairs of trainers and a pair of boots from 2019 you keep meaning to resole.

This is the single highest-impact category on the card and the one most commonly failed.

02

2. Fragrance.

Pass: one bottle, worn consistently, that she would recognise blindfolded. Fail: nothing, or four half-empty bottles received as gifts, deployed at random.

Consistency is the whole mechanism here. A scent only becomes yours through repetition.

03

3. Planning.

Pass: you booked the last three things you did together. Fail: "what do you want to do?" is your primary contribution to the social calendar.

Being wrong about the restaurant costs nothing. Making her choose every time costs something real.

04

4. Rituals.

Pass: there is at least one thing that happens every week without either of you organising it. Fail: your gestures are annual and large.

Fifty-two small things beat one enormous thing. The arithmetic is genuinely not close.

05

5. The bathroom shelf.

Pass: a real body wash, something for your face, and a razor that is not disposable. Fail: one bottle of three-in-one, purchased during a different presidency.

This is the cheapest category to fix on the entire card.

The remedial kit

Categories 1, 2 and 5, solved. Roughly the cost of a decent dinner, and it fixes three of the eight.

06

6. Listening, evidenced.

Pass: you have bought her something she mentioned once, months earlier, that she had forgotten mentioning. Fail: you have asked her what she wants for every occasion in the last three years.

Asking is not thoughtful. Asking is outsourcing.

07

7. The thing she has raised twice.

Pass: there is nothing outstanding. Fail: you know exactly what it is and you thought of it before you finished reading this line.

It has not been raised a third time because the third time would be a real conversation. That is not the same as it being resolved.

08

8. Her people.

Pass: you have made plans with her friends or family without being prompted, at least once. Fail: you attend, pleasantly, when required.

Attendance is the baseline. Initiative is the category.

Six or more passes and you are, statistically, doing better than most. Anything below four and there is a version of this month where you fix three of them for under three hundred dollars and she notices within a fortnight.

The uncomfortable part of this card is that only two of the eight can be solved by buying something. The other six are just attention, which is free, unlimited, and the thing most consistently in short supply.

Frequently asked

What makes someone a good boyfriend?

Consistency more than grandeur. Turning up weekly, doing the planning, remembering the small thing she mentioned in March, and closing out the thing she has raised twice. Only a couple of those can be bought.

What is the fastest way to be a better boyfriend?

Start one weekly ritual and book the next three things you do together. Both are free, both are immediate, and between them they cover the two categories women most often describe as missing.

What should I fix first if I'm failing most of these?

The shoes, one fragrance and the bathroom shelf — three of the eight for about the cost of a good dinner. Then start a weekly ritual, which fixes a fourth for nine dollars a week.
