A dampener does not reduce arm shock — that is a myth the research has killed several times — but it does change the pitch of the impact from a sharp ping to a dull thud, and a great many players strike the ball better when it sounds right. That is a real effect even if the mechanism is psychological. This is the Sampras pattern, which is the one that stays in the strings instead of launching across the court. Buy it as a stocking filler for someone who plays. Skip it if he wants the feedback the ping provides; plenty of good players do.
