The twelve-inch Lodge is the single most useful pan in most kitchens: hot enough to sear properly, oven safe for anything that starts on the hob and finishes under heat, and cheap enough that nobody is precious about it. Eighty-three thousand ratings at 4.7 is about as settled as a recommendation gets. Pre-seasoned, so it works out of the box and improves for years. It is heavy, it needs drying immediately, and it is not for simmering tomatoes. The one piece of cookware worth giving someone who already has cookware.
