What should my boyfriend wear to dinner?
Three outfits cover every restaurant he will ever be taken to. Here is what they are, why they work, and the two items that do most of the lifting.

The short answer
A knit over a collared shirt, dark trousers or clean dark denim, and loafers instead of trainers. That combination is correct in almost every restaurant that does not require a tie, it takes him ninety seconds to assemble, and it photographs well, which is the part nobody says out loud.
If you change one thing about how he dresses for dinner, change the shoes. Footwear moves an outfit further than any garment, and a man in loafers looks like he made a decision. A man in running shoes looks like he did not.

For a genuinely nice restaurant
Add structure. A jacket — not a blazer with brass buttons, just something with a shoulder — over the knit or in place of it. Dark trousers, leather shoes, and a watch that is not plastic. No tie is required almost anywhere in 2026; a jacket usually still is at the top end.
Fragrance matters more at dinner than anywhere else, because you are sitting eighteen inches apart for two hours. Two sprays, warm rather than fresh, applied before he leaves rather than in the car.

For a casual dinner
The knit-over-collar formula still holds, but the collar can be a plain t-shirt and the trousers can be denim as long as the denim is dark and unbroken. What should not change: the shoes and the fit. Casual is not an excuse for a garment that does not fit.
A leather jacket is the single best casual dinner layer, and brown beats black for the same reason it does everywhere else — it works over more things.

What to avoid, in order of severity
Running shoes with anything that is not gym clothing. Shorts, unless the restaurant has sand in it. Anything with a large visible logo. A shirt that has been ironed only on the front. Sunglasses on his head indoors.
None of these are style crimes exactly. They are just the things that make an outfit look accidental, and dinner is the one place where looking deliberate is the whole job.
Frequently asked
Can my boyfriend wear jeans to a nice dinner?
Dark, unfaded, undamaged denim with leather shoes and a jacket is acceptable at most restaurants short of the top tier. If the restaurant has a tasting menu or a dress code on its website, wear trousers instead.
Does he need a jacket for dinner?
At the upper end, yes — and many restaurants keep spares for guests who arrive without one, which tells you how they feel about it. For everything else a knit or a leather jacket reads as sufficiently considered.
What shoes should men wear to dinner?
Loafers cover the most ground. A driver loafer works in summer without socks; a leather sole loafer or a Chelsea boot works in winter. Sneakers only if they are plain white leather and the restaurant is genuinely casual.
