How to buy cologne for a man (without wasting $300)
The highest-reward gift there is, and the easiest to get wrong. There is a way to de-risk it almost entirely.

The hedge
If he has no signature scent, do not buy a full bottle. Buy a sampler of four 20ml bottles across different families, let him live with them for a month, and buy the full size of whichever one runs out first. It costs under a hundred dollars and converts a guess into a certainty.
If he already has a signature scent, the safest gift is a full-size bottle of exactly that, and the second safest is a seasonal complement — something warm and woody if his current one is fresh and citrus-led.

EDT, EDP, parfum, elixir
These describe concentration, not quality. Eau de toilette is lightest and lasts a few hours. Eau de parfum is stronger and lasts most of a working day. Parfum and elixir concentrations are strongest and can last past midnight.
Stronger is not better; it is a different use case. An elixir in an open-plan office is a social problem. An EDT at a winter dinner has evaporated by the main course.
The four families, briefly
Fresh and aquatic: clean, safe, works in heat, easy to like and easy to forget. Woody: bergamot, vetiver, cedar — the office-safe default. Oriental and amber: vanilla, tonka, resin — dense, sweet and devastating in cold weather. Fougère and green: herbal, barbershop, classic.

The arithmetic nobody does
A 100ml bottle at two sprays a day lasts roughly eighteen months. That puts a $350 bottle at well under a dollar per wear, which makes fragrance one of the cheapest luxury categories per use rather than one of the most expensive.
