How to build an old money wardrobe for men

No visible logos. Natural fabrics only — wool, cotton, cashmere, waxed cotton, leather. A restricted palette: navy, camel, hunter green, cream, grey. And repetition: the same small number of items, worn constantly, replaced only when they wear out.

The last rule is the one people skip, and it is the one that actually produces the look. Old money style reads as inherited because the clothes are worn enough to look lived in. A wardrobe of ten unworn expensive things reads as new money in an unfortunate way.

Anchors first: one heritage jacket and one great crewneck. These two carry September through May and they cost less together than a single designer coat.

Then footwear: a loafer. Then the small expensive things — a watch, a wallet, sunglasses, a fragrance. Accessories are where a modest amount of money buys a disproportionate amount of polish, which is why they come after the anchors rather than before.

Assembled properly, a genuine version of this wardrobe runs to a few thousand dollars spread over a couple of years, and each piece has a working life measured in decades. The waxed jacket will look better in ten years than it does now. So will the loafers, the wallet and the watch.

Compare that to replacing a fast-fashion wardrobe annually and the arithmetic favours buying once, which is the entire argument this aesthetic makes about itself.

Anything described as quiet luxury in its own marketing. Anything with a logo shrunk down rather than removed. Anything in a synthetic blend, however good it looks online. And any single item that costs more than the rest of the wardrobe combined — one extraordinary coat over eight mediocre things is the exact opposite of the point.
